Tulum was the last city inhabited and built by the Mayas and was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries.
This site sits on cliffs above the ocean. And afterwards you can go down to the beach for a romantic swim.
There are three major structures of interest at Tulum. El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God which are the three most important buildings. Among the more spectacular buildings here is the Temple of the Frescoes that included a lower gallery and a smaller second story gallery. The Temple of the Frescoes was used as an observatory for tracking the movements of the sun as centuries ago the Mayans knew the sun was the center of the solar system and not the earth as thught by the Europeans at the time.
Niched figurines of the Maya diving god or Venus deity decorate the facade of the temple.

As well as being the only Mayan city built on the coast, Tulum was one of the few protected by a wall. A thick one.
Made of limestone, the 784-metre wall encloses the site on three sides, is seven metres thick (over 22 feet thick), and varies between three and five metres in height. No doubt this fortification helped preserve this lovely seaport.

Just north of the Castillo is a path leading to a sandy beach and the ocean. Stroll along the beach which provides you with ample opportunity for great photographs. This stroll is an adventure around and under nooks and crannies carved out of the cliffs. Each additional turn brings a new, secluded stretch of the Caribbean, perfect for both swimming and reflecting on the ruins above.
